"Because your horse deserves the best"

Body weight monitoring is important for feed management, medication and animal health. Subtle changes may not be noted using body condition scoring. A change in weight of 50 to 60 lbs is necessary for the body condition score to vary by 1 (eg. 4 to 5) Weight loss/gain may indicate a health problem that requires veterinary assistance. The only accurate way to know your horse's weight is by using a scale.

Equine Research Centre, Guelph, Ontario

Check the weight of your horse every year

Even if you don't have any concerns it does no harm to weigh him regularly and make a note of any fluctuations.

99.9% of small animal owners know their animals weight per the scale at the vets office

I have yet to see feeding directions that say: "Feed 1 scoop for every 1,000-pounds of body weight". Feeding directions may read: "Feed 0.50 to 1.0 pound for every 100 pounds of body weight per day."

If this horse was treated with Dox for lyme it would be..  575 kg  =  57 pills every 12 hours  !!!!!   We know if the time comes what to tell the Vet..   Same as small animals  that get weighed at the vets office..

It is important to feed all horses individually.

Feed requirements are based on body weight and activity, so both young and old horses should be weighed to keep current on their rate of gain or loss, and feeding by weight will be more cost effective way to control your expensive grain and hay consumption, resulting in less waste.

There is no such thing as an average horse weight.

1 gram of bute may not releave arthritis symptions of this horse, proper doseing would be 1.25 grams.  Big thank you to Stewart Perry and RI Horse Weighing for coming out to our Barn Cookout on Sunday September 21st!  It was a great success and we all had a blast!  It was great to know the weight of all our horses and it will be nice to be able to monitor them...especially the few horses we have here that have recently moved from other farms and were very underweight.  Looking forward to seeing how much they've gained at their next weigh-in!

Make sure your vet has an accurate weight to treat your horse..It will save you $$ and  you will be certian your horse will be getting the proper dosage.

Your horse should be on an accurate feeding schedule.

Meds are expensive.Do it right the first time.

     Deworming

Horse owners administer wormers and hope for the best. However, this practice will not necessarily target the type of parasite your horse is harbouring. It may also be unnecessarily overexposing harmless low-levels of parasites to the medication, thereby increasing their chance of becoming resistant.

You should have a base weight for your horse. ..

I have yet to see feeding directions that say: "Feed 1 scoop for every 1,000-pounds of body weight". Feeding directions may read: "Feed 0.50 to 1.0 pound for every 100 pounds of body weight per day."

The weight of your horse is the basic guide to calculating balanced nutrition.  It is the  most important factor for sound health and good performance.

Many new, strong  expensive drugs must be administered on the basis of the animal's body weight.  To avoid the danger and waste of overdosing and the ineffectiveness of underdosing, have your horse weighed.

Universities, nationwide, serving equine-related needs, use a scale to accurately attain weight.

Doesn't  it  make sense to have your horse weighed, just as smaller animals are?

Don't let your horse get too fat or too thin.  Have your horse weighed at different ages, seasons of the year.  The record will be an important health guide.

The use of weighing platforms is the only true means of obtaining a horse’s accurate weight.

Why do I need to know my horse’s weight?

Because feed requirements are based on your horse’s body weight and activity. By knowing your horse’s body weight you will insure your horse gets the correct nutrients.
Remember knowing your horse’s weight is also important in the use of medications.
Feeding and performance .
It is expensive to feed performance horses. Relying purely on a visual means of determining a horse’s performance when it is on a particular feed can be misleading and lead to higher costs.
Rations designed for horses should be based on the horse’s weight and its expected performance, i.e. racing, weekend riding, lactation, growth or maintenance.
By knowing a horse’s weight, you will at least know accurately the amount of feed required to maintain that weight. Rations can then be designed over and above this to achieve a particular function.
Underdosing is one of the major causes of the development of resistance to particular drugs by some parasites.
A well-nourished
horse will consume about 2 percent of its body weight per day on a dryweight basis. Thus, a 1,000-pound horse will require approximately 20 pounds of forage or feed per day, or almost 4 tons of dry matter yearly per horse.
Weigh your horse. You can't feed your horse correctly unless you know his weight.
Even if you don't have any concerns it does no harm to weigh him regularly and make a note of any fluctuations.
Equine scales are expensive and not everyone has access to one, so we provide the service for you ..You dont have to spend thousand of dollars.
Feed requirements are based on body weight and activity, so both young and old horses should be weighed to keep current on their rate of gain or loss.
Feeding by weight will be more cost effective way to control your expensive grain and hay consumption, resulting in less waste.
A horse weighing the proper amount should NOT have ribs showing.
Accurate electronic weighing of larger animals removes the guesswork for administration of feed and medicine.
Even a small weight change over a short period can indicate a problem before it is full blown.
If your horse is being weighed on a regular basis, you will be able to tell if there's a problem relatively quickly. If you can weigh your horse on a regular basis, you are going to have a very much better chance of spotting anything that goes wrong which, in an extreme case, could save your horse’s life. Most good stables will arrange for you to have your horse weighed.

Weather Considerations and Feed

Additional feed is essential for maintaining body weight in cold weather, especially if rain and wind are involved. For each 10 degrees F below 32 F, two pounds of additional hay above what is normally fed is needed to maintain body weight. Add wind and rain, and requirements increase by as much as 15 additional pounds. Along with extra hay, you can bump up the calories with fat supplements, such as a top dressing of 1/2 to 2 cups of corn oil daily.

The best plan is to provide a warm, dry shelter, and a waterproof blanket when needed, to protect your horse from the elements, in addition to a moderate increase in calories.

       Worming

You must be careful to apply the recommended dose of horse wormer with each session, because parasites possess the ability to build a resistance towards agents designed to kill them when the agents are not applied in doses strong enough to kill the parasites outright. This is why it is also important to rotate the various types of horse wormers – not only does it increase the spectrum of targeted parasites, it makes it difficult for parasites to build up any sort of resistance or immunity.
